CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS
The modern world is all about
forward momentum, with ambition and shared goals being
the currency of nation building. With assets of more
than RM26.5 billion ($7.5 billion), a shareholder
fund currently standing at RM6.9 billion ($1.9 billion),
a workforce of some 20,000 working through a total
of 40 subsidiaries in 20 countries across the globe,
UEM Group Berhad is a truly global company and one
of Malaysias largest conglomerates. It is at
local level, however, where the rub of UEMs
dedication to its work is most keenly felt. The north-south
highway in Malaysia is a key example. Completed 14
months ahead of schedule and comprising more than
1,000 km of inter-urban expressways stretching from
the Thai border to Singapore, the expressway is an
important economic driver and a paradigm of roads
management. UEM subsidiary PLUS Expressways Berhad
is responsible for the top-to-toe running of the expressway,
including toll management, traffic and systems facilities
management and maintenance. PLUS Expressways is currently
the largest toll concessionaire in southeast Asia,
and one of the largest in the world.
ISO 9001:2000 and 14001:2004
accredited, UEM Group Berhad is a shining example
of diligence and innovation in the field of construction.
With countless projects underway in Malaysia and internationally,
a landmark deal penned between the governments of
China and Malaysia in July proved a watershed moment
for the company. The concession to build the Second
Penang Bridge did not fall into the lap of UEM Group
Berhad by accident, but by years of the design and
implementation of numerous engineering and construction
projects - including the Bukit Jalil Stadium, the
centrepiece of the 1998 Commonwealth Games -- for
which the group has forged a global reputation for
excellence. The $800 million loan committed by the
Chinese government is indicative of the level of cordiality
between the two southeast Asian economic partners
the subsequent contracting of UEM Group Berhad
a potent eulogy to the esteem in which the company
is held in Malaysia. At 23 km the longest bridge in
southeast Asia, work is scheduled to begin in November,
with completion slated for 2011. The project will
be a partnership between UEM Construction Sdn Bhd,
a subsidiary of UEM Builders Berhad, and China Harbour
Engineering Co, of which UEM will hold a 49% stake.
The loan represents the largest single investment
in a foreign country by the Chinese authorities.
At present, UEM has about
$1 billion worth of construction projects in hand.
In the Iskandar Development Region there are some
10,000 acres of land to be developed into a world
class regional city. The group is the largest landowner
in the region. 100 per cent owned by Khazanah Nasional
Berhad, the governments investment arm, UEM
Group Berhad profits from government backing on projects
and private sector methodology, ensuring timely completion
of projects to private sector standards, and fluidity
of financing. With this combination, UEM continues
to grow as an entity, and the Malaysian government
has the optimum partner to ensure the realisation
of the 9th Malaysia Plan and the future prosperity
of an entire nation.
