Tati Nickel’s processing plant in Phoenix uses Activox® technology.

Tati Nickel: Lionore’s ‘flagship operation’

q During the mid-nineties, Tati Nickel Mining Company teamed up with LionOre to float on the Toronto Stock Exchange. This co-operative move to connect a company to an innovative and friendly market facilitated international business and investment. Since first emerging on the Toronto market they have also been listed on the London, Australia and Botswana Stock Exchanges. Tati Nickel is a company which began with a vision much broader than most, and still operates in the same vein today.
The company recently announced that, in order to reduce costs and drive profits, it is testing a process called Activox®, which eliminates the costly step of smelting, thus creating a more environmentally friendly plant. It removes the necessity of transporting low value materials over great distances and produces a market-ready product.
Chris Fredericks, former General Manager of Tati Nickel, explains, “I believe the success of Tati Nickel and LionOre in establishing corporations in this part of the world is generating a lot of interest in Botswana.” As new prospecting methods develop that will drive the lifespan of the business beyond 2020, expansion is the next step.
Mr Fredericks also recognizes the problem of HIV/AIDS in Africa, but he expresses the need to “de-stigmatise this issue and try to establish firm policies and guidelines within our operation to bring forward an awareness that the problem exists.” Such issues contribute to the strong link Tati Nickel has with the government and add to an already bright outlook for reciprocal financial success.
